Monday Nights | November 24 - Dec 8
6-7 pm Rhythm in the body and drumming with Frame Drums
7-8pm Introduction to Hilal Dance
Explore rhythm practices which relax, invigorate and rejuvenate. Anyone interested in the oral transmission of culture and how ancient trance traditions can be used within a contemporary creative practice are welcome to attend. The improvisational relationship between music and movement will be explored through these workshops.

Hilal Dance is a contemporary Egyptian dance form developed by the internationally renowned Egyptian artist Suraya Hilal. Hilal dance draws its inspiration from the traditional ecstatic dance cultures of Egypt and extends these traditions in an expansive and contemporary way. Suraya Hilal has developed a system of body work akin to other Eastern practices which use the breath to become more present in the body.www.hilaldance.com

Marianthe was fortunate to learn traditional Egyptian drumming with Master drummer Ibrahim el Minyawi. She continues to learn Hilal Dance with Suraya Hilal and has drummed for Hilal Dance workshops and performances since 2007 with Sarah Hamilton and Suraya Hilal. She teaches rhythm drumming & dance nationally and is currently developing rhythm programs which enhance literacy in primary aged children.
